I couldn’t believe we were pulling up to the Duval County Jail. I had never been there before and knew I’d never want to return.

York was a hothead, but he was a good kid. What made him move to stealing was way beyond me. But if it turned out to be clothes that he stole, I wouldn’t be surprised.

My mom went up to the counter and said, “I’m here to get my baby. It’s late. Y’all need to let him out. His name is York Peace. I need to speak to someone that can get my baby out right now, right now!”

“Ma’am, hold on now,” an officer said to her. “You have to fill out some papers and then have a seat.”

“Aww, somebody gon’ let him out tonight!” The officer could see this was a mom with nothing to lose.

“Let me go and get someone to talk to you who’s over your son’s case.”

I went over to my mom and said, “Ma, you’ve got to calm down.”

“Yasmin, we are at a police station and it’s 10:30 at night. Plus, I should still be at work. Do you think I look like someone who cares to look calm? I’m tryin’ to get my son out of here, and he better not be up in here with no adult men.”

It was the longest ten minutes in my lifetime. My mother wore out the rubber on the bottom of her work shoes pacing, as she waited on someone to give her some direction.

Just as she sat down to rest her feet, someone walked up and said, “Ma’am, I’m Officer Floyd, the juvenile officer. I understand you’re Peace’s mom. I need to go over this paperwork with you regarding a hearing for your son and then I can release him into your custody.”

“Okay—but where is he?” my mom said, looking relieved.

“Follow me,” he answered.

She stood to her feet. “My son has never been arrested in his life. Do I have to pay to get him out, or what?”

“No, ma’am. He’ll get a date for a hearing and at that time you’ll pay whatever fines there are.”

Hearing that made me remember about the modeling opportunity I had. That would give me money to help Mom pay York’s fine. I needed to think about calling that lady to sign up.

Yancy and I were told to wait while Mom went with the officer.

My brother interrupted my thoughts by saying, “I’m in trouble, but York … oohh weee! He might have to move down with Uncle John.”

“You’re the only one that wants to leave. Hopefully neither one of you won’t have to do that and ‘cause Ma all that grief. I still can’t believe you and Veida,” I scolded.

Yancy responded, “I can handle Ma. Being out of school a few days is no big deal. I care about the girl, all right? You’re just jealous that you don’t have a dad who is there like hers and that your dad’s locked up,” he continued.

“What are you trying to say, Yancy? He’s your daddy too.
